Your Supportive Pregnancy & Post Natal Massage

Pregnancy Massage   Seated Chair Massage in Pregnancy   Relax  Release tension

This can be a magical and maybe confusing time for pre-natal mothers (and partners!) as both mother and baby undergo many changes.  Extra pressure on joints, ligaments and organs can cause discomfort.  Massage during this time and also during labour and post-natal may help by calming and releasing tension.

It is safe to have massage through all trimesters.

The treatment is carried out either on the floor on a futon in a side lying position supported with pillows for comfort (so no need to clamber onto a couch) on a massage chair (very supportive) or by leaning on a stability ball (excellent for 3rd trimester as allows space under the ribcage)

A few possible benefits.......

  • Releases muscular tension in the body and helps with pain associated with pelvic girdle instability (symphysis pubis dysfunction).
  • Regulates blood pressure and stress hormones
  • Improved sleep
  • Improved circulation - better for babys' nourishment and assists with removal of waste and swelling/oedema
  • Improves sluggish bowel movements
  • Enhances your connection with your baby - and your partner is very welcome to come and learn some helpful techniques

The session may include

  • Advice and exercises to strengthen the abdominal floor
  • Opportunity to try moves and positions to help for labour and birth.  These can also encourage baby to settle in a good position.
  • Relaxation is vital in labour - learn how to breath, relax and feel calm.
  • Remember when you feel good baby does too!

The combination of massage, shiatsu energy work and exercise may help develop deep relaxation and a feeling of well being to help support your changing body whilst teasing away tension.  You can really tune in to baby.

Regular massage throughout pregnancy (according to Suzanne Yates) improve the probability of normal labour.  However babies can be unpredictable can't they?!

As well as massage, good nutrition and the right 'dose' of exercise are necessities for a healthy pregnancy.

Post Natal Support - from 2-6 weeks after birth massage nurtures Mum which promotes recovery.  For post natal depression it offers Mum a space to rest the mind and body and be suported.

Melanie has trained with APNT - Wellmother with Suzanne Yates. This incorporates western and eastern approaches to pregnancy and childbirth looking at the fascinating maternal changes and the embryological/fetal development.  The practical bodywork component incorporates and advises on many aspects of massage - pre-natal, during labour and post-natal as well as concentrating on areas surrounding breast care, perineum care and scar tissue.

Whether you chose to visit/be visited once or regularly the massage session will be planned for YOU taking account of your obstetric and medical history, lifestyle and stage of pregnancy.

These treatments are intended to help support you through your pregnancy and IN NO WAY replaces the ante-natal care provided by your Midwife.

Physical activity before pregnancy can lower the risk of gestational diabetes by up to half, while exerise in early pregnancy cuts the risk by a quarter according to researchers at Harvard School of Public Health in the US.  For more information www.fitpro.com

Patrick O'Brien a consultant Obstetrician at University Hospital London and spokesman for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists said ............

"Anything that's relaxing for pregnant women is to be welcomed as sometimes pregnancy is difficult, tiring and stressful.  Any type of massage is fine but avoid anything too hot like a steam room or sauna"
